University Mental Health day 2026
Staying human in hard conversations: a person-centred approach to HR wellbeing
Many HR professionals regularly sit with grief, conflict, misconduct, safeguarding, redundancies, disclosures and investigations. Yet we’re rarely trained for the emotional impact of holding all that responsibility. This session introduces practical counselling informed concepts that can help you protect your own wellbeing, stay grounded under pressure, and approach difficult employee relations work with greater clarity, steadiness and compassion.
In this short session we will explore:
• how to stay empathic without becoming overwhelmed
• boundaries and emotional containment
• congruence and authenticity under pressure
• simple reflective practices to reduce burnout and compassion fatigue
This is not therapy and not heavy theory. It is about real, usable ways to look after yourself while doing demanding people work. If you work in Higher Education HR and quietly carry a lot for others, you are very welcome.
Join UHR and Steve Widdowson, HR project manager and qualified counsellor, this world mental health day to learn what we can do to support our own mental health in the workplace
