From Trailblazer to Thought Leader: Lisa’s Experience at the IES Annual Conference

10 October 2025      Emma Walton-Pond, Communications Officer

One of the most exciting things about being a UHR Trailblazer is the opportunity it creates to keep learning, growing, and contributing to the wider Higher Education community. This week, Lisa Bryant, one of our Trailblazers, attended the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) Annual Conference: Boosting Productivity Through People on behalf of UHR – and came away inspired and energised.

The conference brought together experts, leaders, and HR professionals from across sectors to explore how people – not just processes – drive real productivity. With a full day of insightful speakers, engaging discussions, and networking opportunities, Lisa found it to be a rich source of ideas and reflection.

Key Insights and Takeaways

One of the recurring themes throughout the day was the importance of human insight in an increasingly data-driven world. As Lisa reflected:

In an era of AI, humans are fundamental when gaining insight. Insight is the why – and it comes from human interaction, not just information.”

This perspective was echoed in conversations about how to make the most of new technologies. Rather than starting with AI for its own sake, the message was clear: start with the problem, then use technology as a tool to support people, not replace them. As Lisa put it, AI understands the maths – but it’s people who think.

Another key theme was the connection between engagement and performance. Data consistently shows that where managers and employees are more engaged, organisations perform better. It’s a reminder that effective leadership and open communication are central to organisational success.

And perhaps most importantly, Lisa noted the emphasis on employee voice – ensuring people are heard, and that their insights inform better decisions. True collaboration takes time, but the outcomes are worth it: empowered teams, stronger cultures, and shared success.
