Session 4: Supporting Individuals – Practical and Emotional Support for Redundant

Our guest speakers for this session are Tom Long and Esther Maxwell from Shakespeare Martineau and Linda Burke and Jenny Winters from B3sixty.

Legal/Technical Focus:

Redundancy payments, notice periods, and contractual entitlements.
Research staff complexities—handling redundancies in grant-funded roles, redeployment opportunities, and the Concordat for Researchers.
Options for outplacement services and career transition support with limited budgets.
Supporting visa-holding employees and other complex cases.

Interpersonal/Wellbeing Focus:

Coaching skills for HR professionals to support affected employees.
Psychological impact of redundancy—signposting to mental health and wellbeing support.
Managing guilt and emotional labour in HR roles.
