Session 3: Selection and Decision-Making – Ensuring Fairness and Transparency in the HE Context.

Our guest speakers for this session are Tom Long and Esther Maxwell from Shakespeare Martineau and Alex Killick, Founder and Director of Leading Kind (formerly Director of People at Glasgow Caledonian University), who will be joined by Kathryn Harrison-Graves, Deputy CEO of Advance HE to deliver a case study on a restructure programme.

  • Legal/Technical Focus:
    • Designing fair and objective selection criteria, ensuring transparency and legal compliance.
    • Selection pools and matrices for academic and research roles—how to define and apply fair scoring mechanisms.
    • Programme teach-out and redundancy pools—how disciplinary breadth, workload allocation models, and cross-departmental responsibilities impact decision-making.
    • Mitigating bias and ensuring compliance with employment law and equality considerations.
    • Handling redeployment and alternative job offers.
  • Interpersonal/Wellbeing Focus:
    • Supporting line managers in having redundancy conversations.
    • Addressing staff anxieties and maintaining morale among remaining employees.
    • Managing personal and team resilience in emotionally charged situations.
